Dental X-rays already use a small amount of radiation, and digital sensors typically use less than traditional film to capture the same image. We also take X-rays only when they are clinically useful, not as a routine at every visit. If you are pregnant or have concerns, tell us and we will factor that into whether an image is needed now or can wait. The aim is always to gather the information your care needs while keeping exposure as low as is reasonable.

An intraoral camera is a small handheld camera that takes close-up images inside your mouth and shows them on a screen beside the chair. It lets us point to a cracked filling, a spot of decay, or an area of gum irritation and show you exactly what we are describing. Many patients find that seeing the image makes a recommendation far easier to understand, because you are looking at the same thing we are rather than picturing it from words alone.

Most everyday care is covered by the digital imaging we use chairside. When a case genuinely calls for advanced imaging — such as a CBCT scan for certain implant or surgical plans — we tell you plainly and refer you to an imaging provider, coordinating your care and sharing records so nothing has to be repeated. Being honest about what a case needs, and where it is best done, is part of how we look after you.

Yes. Showing you your own images on the screen is one of the main reasons we use them. We will walk through what an X-ray or intraoral photo shows, point out anything worth noting, and explain what it means in plain language. If you would like a copy of your records, whether for your own reference or to share with another provider, just ask and our team can arrange it for you.

There is no single schedule that fits everyone. How often X-rays are useful depends on your age, your history of decay or gum disease, and what we can already see during your examination. For many patients with healthy teeth, images are needed only occasionally; for others, they may be taken a little more often to keep track of a known issue. We explain why an image is being recommended before taking it, so it never feels automatic.

If your situation calls for imaging beyond our digital X-rays and camera, we tell you plainly and arrange a referral to a provider who has the right equipment. We share your existing records so the process is smooth and nothing is duplicated unnecessarily, and we stay involved in coordinating your care afterward. Knowing the limits of what can be done here, and being honest about them, is something we treat as part of good dentistry rather than an exception to it.
