A Brighter Shade

Professional Teeth Whitening in Scarborough

Whitening planned by a dentist, matched to your enamel, and paced so sensitivity never runs the show.

A smile picks up colour slowly — espresso runs, turmeric-rich dinners, the occasional glass of red. At Midland Dental Center, our boutique practice at Midland and Eglinton pairs professional-strength whitening with a proper exam first, so the shade we aim for is one that suits your face and the process stays comfortable from start to finish.

New patients welcome — weekday and weekend availability.

Two ways to whiten, one standard of care

Every whitening plan at our Scarborough clinic starts the same way: with an examination, not a gel. We look at what kind of discolouration you actually have, because the answer changes everything. Yellowing from diet and age lives partly on the enamel surface and partly within the tooth, and peroxide-based whitening handles it well. Grey tones, old trauma, or discolouration from certain medications behave differently, and pretending otherwise would waste your time and money.

From there you have two supervised routes. An in-chair session concentrates the work into a single visit — gums shielded, professional-strength gel applied in controlled cycles — and suits people who want momentum. Custom take-home trays, made from a precise scan or impression of your own teeth, spread the same chemistry over a couple of weeks at a gentler pace, and the trays stay useful for top-ups years later. Plenty of patients combine the two.

What you will not get from us is a one-size answer. If your discolouration is the kind whitening cannot touch, we will say so plainly and talk through bonding or veneers instead. Transformation is the goal, but honesty about the starting point is how we get there.

When whitening is the right tool

Whitening is a shade change, not a shape change. It tends to be the right call when the points below describe you.

  • Your teeth are healthy, with no untreated decay or gum inflammation to sort out first.
  • The colour you want to change is a general yellowing rather than a single dark tooth.
  • You are happy with the shape and position of your teeth and only want them brighter.
  • Your front teeth carry little or no visible dental work, since restorations will not lighten.
  • You can commit to a short stretch of aftercare while the fresh result settles in.

Your whitening visit, step by step

  1. Exam and shade mapping

We assess your enamel, gums, and existing dental work, then record your starting shade so progress is measured rather than guessed. Any cleaning or repair your mouth needs happens before whitening, because gel over plaque gives patchy results.

  2. Matching the method to you

Together we choose between a concentrated in-chair session, custom take-home trays, or a combination — weighing your timeline, your sensitivity history, and how bright you realistically want to go.

  3. Protected, supervised whitening

Your gums are isolated and the gel strength is chosen for your enamel, not a default setting. Because a dentist oversees each stage, we can dial the intensity up or down as your teeth respond.

  4. Shade check and honest review

We compare the result against your recorded starting point and against what suits your complexion. Natural brightness, not a flat paper-white, is the finish line we aim for together.

  5. A plan to keep it

You leave with aftercare guidance and, if you chose trays, the means to refresh your shade down the road. Regular hygiene visits at our Eglinton Avenue East clinic keep new surface stain from settling in.

What whitening delivers, and where it stops

Benefits

  • Noticeably lifts everyday staining from coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking.
  • Supervised, professional-strength gel produces a more uniform result than shelf kits manage.
  • Non-invasive — no drilling, no anaesthetic, and your natural tooth structure is untouched.
  • Custom trays give you a controlled way to maintain the shade for years.

Honest limits

  • Crowns, veneers, and fillings keep their original colour, so visible dental work may need updating to match.
  • Deep grey or medication-related discolouration often responds only partially, and we will tell you before you start.
  • Brightness fades gradually as staining habits resume; it is a renewable result, not a permanent one.
  • Chips, gaps, and uneven edges need bonding or veneers — whitening changes colour alone. Individual treatment plans and outcomes vary.

Comfort, sensitivity, and keeping the glow

Sensitivity is the most common worry we hear, and supervision is precisely the answer to it. Because we control the gel concentration and contact time, we can shorten cycles, space sessions apart, or switch you to a milder tray formula the moment your teeth object. A desensitizing paste before and after treatment helps too. For most patients, any twinges settle within a day or two of finishing.

The first forty-eight hours after whitening are when enamel is most receptive to new stain, so that is the window to be careful with dark drinks, deeply coloured sauces, and tobacco. After that, ordinary good habits do most of the work: brushing well, rinsing with water after coffee, and keeping your professional cleanings on schedule.

How long the shade lasts varies with your habits — often many months, sometimes a couple of years. If a milestone is coming up, a wedding or a graduation photo, mention the date early. Building in lead time lets us reach your shade gently instead of forcing it in a rushed final week.

Understanding whitening fees

Whitening is one of the more accessible cosmetic treatments, and the fee reflects the route you take rather than a flat rate. What moves the number is fairly simple.

  • In-chair session, custom take-home trays, or a combined approach.
  • How far your shade needs to travel, which shapes how many cycles or weeks of gel you use.
  • Any hygiene or restorative work your exam shows should happen first.
  • Replacement gel for future top-ups once you own custom trays.

Because whitening is cosmetic, dental plans and the Canadian Dental Care Plan almost never contribute, and we would rather tell you that at the outset than let you discover it on a statement. Every patient receives a written quote after the exam, before anything begins, so the decision is made with full information.

Coverage, plainly stated

Insurers treat whitening as elective, so expect no coverage from private plans or the Canadian Dental Care Plan for the whitening itself. If your visit also includes an exam or cleaning, those portions may still be claimable under your plan in the usual way, and our front desk can help you sort out which is which.

If budget is the deciding factor, say so. Sometimes a thorough professional cleaning alone recovers more brightness than people expect, and we would rather recommend the smaller step first than sell you the bigger one.
