The mechanism: why teeth feel anything at all

As long as enamel (or, below the gumline, a thin layer called cementum) seals those tubules, the nerve stays insulated from the outside world.
Sensitivity happens when that seal is breached. Once dentin is exposed, temperature changes, sweet or acidic foods, and even a stream of air move the fluid inside the tubules, and that movement tugs directly on the nerve endings. Technique changes protect the seal you have left. Switch to a soft-bristled brush, hold it with a light grip, and let the bristles sweep rather than scrub — enamel and gums are lost to pressure, not preserved by it.
